What Does Your AHI Number Mean?

Your sleep study report includes an AHI — Apnea-Hypopnea Index. It counts how many times per hour your breathing paused or became shallow. Here's what each range means for your treatment.

Normal
AHI < 5

Fewer than 5 breathing interruptions per hour. No treatment needed.

Mild Apnea
AHI 5–14

Up to 14 events per hour. Lifestyle changes and a CPAP may be prescribed.

Moderate Apnea
AHI 15–29

Up to 29 events per hour. CPAP therapy is strongly recommended.

Severe Apnea
AHI ≥ 30

30+ events per hour. Immediate CPAP therapy required. High cardiac risk.

Your prescription will specify a pressure range (e.g., 6–12 cm H₂O).

CPAP machines are set to deliver continuous air pressure to keep your airway open. APAP machines auto-adjust within your prescribed range. BiPAP machines use two pressures — one for inhaling, one for exhaling — and are prescribed for more complex cases. The comparison table below will show which machines fit your prescription.

What's at Stake

Untreated Apnea isn't just snoring.

Every night without treatment is a night your heart works harder than it should, your brain gets less oxygen than it needs, and your body ages faster than it has to.

Hypertension and atrial fibrillation
Type 2 diabetes risk elevation
Depression and cognitive decline
Commercial driver license risk (DOT physical failures)

higher risk of heart attack

Untreated moderate-to-severe apnea triples your risk of cardiac events.

2.5×

more likely to have an accident

Daytime sleepiness from apnea increases driving accident risk by 2.5×.

12 yrs

shorter life expectancy

Severe untreated apnea is associated with up to 12 years of reduced lifespan.

71%

lowest recorded O₂ saturation

Some severe cases see oxygen drop below 80% dozens of times per night.
